Islamabad Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling, as visa policies and entry requirements are subject to change.
Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, welcomes international travelers through Islamabad International Airport (ISB), the country's largest and most modern aviation facility. Entry requirements for Islamabad follow Pakistan's national immigration policies, which vary significantly based on nationality, purpose of visit, and duration of stay. Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Pakistan, though the country has expanded its e-visa system in recent years to facilitate easier access for tourists and business travelers. The immigration process in Islamabad is generally straightforward for travelers with proper documentation. Upon arrival, visitors proceed through immigration control where officers verify travel documents, visas, and the purpose of visit. Pakistan has implemented biometric systems at major entry points, so travelers should expect fingerprint scanning and photographs as part of the standard entry procedure. The entire process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on flight arrival times and queue lengths. Before traveling to Islamabad, ensure your passport has at least six months validity beyond your intended stay and contains blank pages for entry stamps. It's crucial to obtain the correct visa type for your purpose of visit, as visa violations can result in fines, deportation, or future entry bans. Pakistan's security situation requires heightened awareness, so travelers should register with their embassy upon arrival and stay informed about current travel advisories for different regions of the country.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Pakistan maintains a visa-required policy for most international travelers, with limited visa-free access. Tips for Smooth Entry

Dress modestly and conservatively when arriving in Pakistan, as this creates a positive first impression with immigration officials
Have all documents organized and easily accessible in a travel folder before reaching the immigration counter
Keep accommodation booking confirmations and return flight details readily available, even on your phone
Be patient and polite with immigration officers; answer questions clearly and honestly without volunteering unnecessary information
Ensure your visa type matches your stated purpose of visit to avoid complications
Take a photograph of your passport and visa stamps immediately after entry in case documents are lost
Exchange a small amount of currency at the airport for immediate needs, though rates are better in the city
Register with your embassy within 24-48 hours of arrival, especially for extended stays
If traveling to certain regions (Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, tribal areas), you may need additional permits - arrange these in advance
Keep immigration officer's stamp visible and check that the permitted stay duration is correctly marked in your passport

Customs & Duty-Free

Pakistan Customs operates under the Federal Board of Revenue and enforces regulations on goods entering the country. Travelers must declare items exceeding duty-free allowances and prohibited items are strictly enforced. Pakistan is an Islamic Republic, so alcohol and certain other items face strict restrictions. Honesty in declarations is essential as penalties for smuggling or false declarations can be severe.

Alcohol
Non-Muslims only: No duty-free allowance for tourists. Alcohol import is strictly prohibited for general travelers.
Only Pakistani nationals and residents with permits may import limited quantities. Tourists cannot bring alcohol. Attempting to import alcohol can result in confiscation, fines, or imprisonment.

Items must be reasonable for trip duration. New items in commercial quantities will be questioned. Electronics for personal use are generally allowed but expensive items may require declaration.
Electronics
One laptop, one camera, one mobile phone for personal use are duty-free
Additional or high-value electronics may incur duties. Professional camera equipment may require temporary import documentation.

Health Requirements

Health requirements for entering Pakistan vary based on your country of origin and recent travel history. While routine vaccinations are not mandatory for most travelers, certain vaccinations are required if arriving from countries with specific disease risks. It's essential to check current requirements before travel as these can change based on global health situations.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or having transited through yellow fever endemic countries in Africa or South America within the past 6 days. Proof of vaccination must be presented.
  • Polio - Pakistan is one of the remaining polio-endemic countries. Travelers from certain countries may need proof of polio vaccination. Additionally, travelers staying in Pakistan for more than 4 weeks must show proof of polio vaccination (given at least 4 weeks before departure) when leaving the country.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to food and water contamination risks
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have contact with blood or body fluids
  • Typhoid - Recommended due to contaminated food and water risks
  • Rabies - Consider for travelers involved in outdoor activities or with potential animal contact
  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot
  • COVID-19 - Check current requirements as these change frequently
  • Cholera - Consider for travelers to areas with active outbreaks
  • Japanese Encephalitis - For travelers spending extended time in rural areas, especially during transmission season

Health Insurance

Health insurance is not mandatory for entry but is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Islamabad are adequate for routine care, but serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to facilities in other countries. Ensure your travel insurance covers medical evacuation, as costs can exceed USD 100,000. Many Pakistani hospitals require payment upfront or proof of insurance before treatment. Carry proof of insurance and emergency contact numbers at all times.

Current Health Requirements: Always check current health requirements 4-6 weeks before travel, as these can change rapidly. COVID-19 requirements have varied and may include vaccination certificates, negative PCR tests, or quarantine measures. Visit the Pakistan Ministry of Health website, your country's travel health advisory service, or consult a travel medicine clinic. The CDC, WHO, and similar organizations maintain updated travel health notices. Some regions of Pakistan have specific health risks (malaria in certain areas, dengue fever), so research your specific destinations within the country.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport (included on parent's passport is not accepted). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from absent parent(s) authorizing travel, including contact information and trip details. Single parents should carry child's birth certificate showing parental relationship. Divorced parents should carry custody documents. Children require the same visa as adults. Unaccompanied minors require special arrangements with airlines and may face additional immigration scrutiny. Keep copies of children's documents separate from originals.

Traveling with Pets

Pets (dogs and cats) may be imported with proper documentation. Required: (1) Import permit from Department of Animal Quarantine, Ministry of Food Security, obtained before travel; (2) Health certificate from licensed veterinarian in origin country issued within 7 days of travel; (3) Rabies vaccination certificate - pet must be vaccinated at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before travel; (4) Microchip identification recommended; (5) Airline-approved travel crate. Pets may be quarantined upon arrival for up to 30 days depending on origin country and health certificate compliance. Some airlines have restrictions on pet travel to Pakistan. Certain dog breeds may be prohibited. Contact Pakistan's Ministry of Food Security well in advance (at least 60 days) for current requirements and permit application.

Extended Stays and Visa Extensions

Tourist visas are typically issued for 30-90 days. To extend stay, apply at the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports in Islamabad or regional offices at least 7-10 days before visa expiry. Required documents: passport, visa extension application form, recent photographs, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation proof, reason for extension, and extension fee (varies). Extensions are not guaranteed and are granted at discretion of immigration authorities. Overstaying visa results in fines (approximately PKR 1,000-5,000 per day), possible detention, deportation, and future entry bans. For stays beyond tourist visa limits, consider applying for appropriate long-term visa (business, work, student) from Pakistani embassy before travel. Employment requires work permit from Board of Investment. Students need admission letter from recognized institution.

Journalists and Media Personnel

Journalists, photographers, and film crews require special journalist visa and must obtain No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Pakistan's Ministry of Information & Broadcasting before arrival. Tourist or business visas cannot be used for journalistic activities. Application process can take 4-8 weeks. Required: detailed project description, employer letter, equipment list, and itinerary. Working as journalist on tourist visa can result in arrest, deportation, and equipment confiscation. Even social media influencers conducting professional filming may require permissions. Contact Press Information Department (PID) for current requirements.

Travel to Restricted Areas

Certain areas of Pakistan require special permits for foreigners: Gilgit-Baltistan (some areas), Azad Jammu & Kashmir, tribal areas near Afghanistan border, and some parts of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Apply for No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Ministry of Interior through local police or tour operator at least 2-4 weeks before travel. Some areas may be completely off-limits to foreigners. Traveling to restricted areas without proper permits can result in arrest, detention, and deportation. Security situation varies - check current travel advisories. Tour operators can often facilitate permit applications more efficiently than individual travelers.

Business Travelers

Business visitors need business visa, not tourist visa. Required documentation: invitation letter from Pakistani company/organization on letterhead with details of business purpose, duration, and sponsor information; company registration documents of inviting organization; proof of business relationship. Business visa allows meetings, conferences, and negotiations but not employment or paid work. For establishing business or employment, different visa categories apply. Keep all business documentation accessible during entry as immigration may verify purpose of visit.

Dual Nationals and POC/NICOP Holders

Pakistani dual nationals must enter and exit Pakistan on their Pakistani passport (NICOP - National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis, or POC - Pakistan Origin Card). Using foreign passport for entry/exit can cause complications. NICOP/POC holders have different immigration procedures and don't require visas. Former Pakistani citizens who have renounced citizenship should carry renunciation certificate to avoid complications. Some countries don't recognize dual nationality with Pakistan - verify your status before travel.
